Essential oils have gained popularity in recent years for their versatile use in aromatherapy and holistic health. Often associated with various health claims, these concentrated plant extracts offer unique aromatic experiences that have the potential to improve mood, relieve stress and address a range of health concerns. However, it is essential to understand their nature, applications, and potential benefits, while also considering the controversies surrounding some of these claims. This comprehensive guide explores the world of essential oils, their mechanisms of action, popular types, health benefits, diverse uses, tips for choosing the right products, safety considerations, and the nitty-gritty of incorporating essential oils into your everyday life.
Essential oils are highly concentrated compounds extracted from plants. They capture the natural aroma “essence” of the source plant. Each essential oil has a unique aromatic profile due to the presence of specific aromatic compounds. These oils are obtained through distillation or mechanical techniques such as cold pressing. It is extremely important to note that essential oils obtained through chemical processes are not considered true essential oils.
Pure oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied to the skin in their pure form, but should always be used diluted in a carrier oil or may be added in small amounts to finished cosmetic products that do not contain perfumes or essential oils. more.
Essential oils are primarily used in aromatherapy, a practice that involves inhaling their aromatic properties. These oils interact with the human body through several mechanisms:
Topical application: Some aromatic compounds in essential oils can be absorbed through the skin. Certain application methods are thought to enhance absorption, such as applying heat or targeting specific areas of the body.
Inhalation: Inhaling the aromas of essential oils can stimulate the limbic system, an area of the brain associated with emotions, behavior, smell, and long-term memory. The limbic system also plays a role in controlling physiological functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
There are over 90 types of essential oils, each with different scents and potential health benefits. Here are 10 popular essential oils and the health claims often associated with them:
Peppermint: Used to boost energy and aid digestion;
Lavender: used for stress relief and relaxation;
Sandalwood: Known to calm nerves and improve concentration;
Bergamot: Used to reduce stress and improve skin conditions such as eczema;
Rose: Believed to improve mood and reduce anxiety;
Chamomile: Often used for mood enhancement and relaxation;
Ylang-ylang: Used to treat headaches, nausea, and skin diseases;
Tea Tree: Used to fight infections and boost immunity;
Jasmine: Suggested for dealing with depression, aiding childbirth, and increasing libido;
Lemon: Used to aid digestion, improve mood, relieve headaches, and more.
The use of essential oils for various health conditions continues to be a subject of interest and ongoing research. Some common health problems that essential oils have been studied for include:
In addition to aromatherapy, essential oils have a variety of uses. They are used to scent the home, freshen laundry and add natural fragrances to homemade cosmetics. Some essential oils, such as citronella, are also being studied as an alternative to synthetic mosquito repellents, although their effectiveness varies. In addition, essential oils with preservative properties can extend the shelf life of some food products.
Choosing high-quality essential oils is essential for safe and effective use. Because this industry is not strictly regulated, the quality and composition of the oils can vary widely. Consider these tips when choosing essential oils:
The most important thing to look for when choosing which essential oils to buy is that they are produced according to controlled organic farming standards, according to the experts at Primavera. It is crucial to use 100% pure organic essential oils, as they contain the healing properties you expect.
Low-quality oils can do more harm than good, aromatherapists note, as shown by an independent study by the Dr. Hauck Research Institute. Also, make sure the label clearly states the botanical name of the plant, as well as where it was grown (e.g., France, South Africa, etc.), how the oil was extracted (via steam distillation or cold-pressed for citrus peels), and what part of the plant it comes from (roots, leaves, flowers, etc.).
Although essential oils are generally safe to inhale or apply topically when properly diluted, there are potential side effects and safety considerations to keep in mind. Some people may experience rashes, asthma attacks, headaches or allergic reactions. In rare cases, severe reactions have been reported, and certain oils have been associated with adverse effects. Caution is recommended for children, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and the elderly. Ingestion of essential oils is generally not recommended as it can cause unwanted harm, including damage to the lining of the mouth.
The International Federation of Aromatherapists does not recommend taking essential oils internally unless the application is under the supervision of a physician qualified in clinical aromatherapy! We always advise our customers to be extremely careful and that each intake be coordinated with a professional aromatherapist or at least be under the supervision of a clinical aroma specialist.
The use of essential oils in culinary recipes does not pose any risks, since after heat treatment, the components that could harm are not as strong.

Blended in high-quality organic carrier oils and massaged into the skin, essential oils can fully unleash their botanical skin care powers. You can mix an individually scented oil for facial or body skin care, your own cosmetics or a personalized aromatic blend for room fragrance according to your wishes. Get inspired by our collection of recipes.
When you mix alcohol (eg vodka or spirits) with essential oils and/or (plant) water, the liquid naturally becomes cloudy. This is not a quality defect, but a completely natural reaction. Essential oils will only dissolve in alcohol without clouding if the two are mixed at very high speed (by machine). Therefore, fogging is completely normal and harmless.
Experience shows that insects and mosquitoes avoid essential oils of citronella, lemongrass, fine lavender, lavender, geranium, tea tree and cedar.

Essential oils are highly concentrated. About 30 damask roses provide 1 drop of essential rose oil, from about 8 million jasmine flowers 1 kg of real jasmine absolute is extracted. Therefore, the contents of a small bottle contain a concentrated form of fragrance.
2–8 drops in the aroma lamp or 3–5 drops in the ultrasonic aroma diffuser (for one filling in most models; in the Petit mini diffuser – 1–2 drops, and in the Feel Happy with a 200 ml tank – 5–8 according to the technical data in the instructions, in the filling steps – 3–5) are enough to scent the room – and you are walking through a citrus grove or the fragrant hills of Provence. See the table of drops for each diffuser.
Recommendations for application and dosage of blends, such as massage oils or aromatic oils for skin care, can be found on the bottle labels or on each essential oil's page.
In general, less is more! In addition, many fragrances develop their bouquet and richness of nuance only when diluted.
Conversion tip: 1 ml corresponds to approximately 20–25 drops of essential oil.
Organic carrier oils for skin care can be used in many different ways. Both pure and blended with essential oils , they are very popular for use as face and body oils. Blended with essential oils, they are ideal for massage or aromatherapy. When adding essential oils, it is a good idea to pay attention to the inherent smell of the organic plant oils. For example, for a relaxing massage oil with lavender essential oil, an odorless carrier oil such as jojoba or almond oil is better than black cumin oil with a peppery, spicy aroma. Some organic skin care oils, such as calendula oil, are often used in baby and child care, as the oil makes sensitive, inflamed skin more resistant. You can find more recipes in the recipe collection.
When buying high-quality essential oils , you can use various parameters as a guide.
1. The label must have important information: botanical name, extraction, part of the plant, quality, e.g. controlled organic cultivation, country of origin, as well as batch number and expiration date after opening. In the case of lavender, for example, the botanical name Lavandula Angustifolia should be given, as this is the true lavender. There are other types of lavender, such as "Lavandin" (Lavandula x-intermedia) or lavender spike (Lavandula latifolia), but they have a different effect than fine lavender or lavender extra (Lavandula angustifolia).
2. When you buy the essential oil, it should have the original sealed cap so that you can rule out that your oil has previously come into contact with oxygen and therefore could not oxidize. PRIMAVERA essential oils have a child-proof closure that cannot be opened and rattles when first opened.
In low cosmetic doses (1-2%) for use on the skin, all essential oils from the PRIMAVERA range are safe. A dosage of 1% means that you should mix about 20-25 drops of essential oil in 100ml of organic carrier oil.
CAUTION: Please always consider the dosage recommendations on the respective essential oil label before mixing anything yourself.
If you have high blood pressure, the following essential oils should not be inhaled (breathed in directly):
The following oils are considered mildly antihypertensive in aromatherapy:
IMPORTANT: These essential oils are to be used as adjunctive therapy, not intended for primary treatment.
All PRIMAVERA essential oils can be used for low blood pressure (hypotension), as essential oils can have a weak antihypertensive effect only for a short period of time. The effect on blood pressure is mainly due to the repeated strong inhalation of the essential oil, less to the physical use.
The following oils are considered mildly antihypertensive in aromatherapy:
IMPORTANT: These essential oils are to be used as adjunctive therapy, not intended for primary treatment.
The most common way to obtain essential oils is through steam distillation. The three main stages of distillation are: evaporation, cooling, and separation.
The plant material is carefully layered in the so-called alembic. In one method, the plant matter is added directly to the water and the kettle is brought to a boil. In the second method, which is much more common today, the plant material is layered on a rack in the still and steam is added. The rising steam loosens the oil droplets from the plant and carries them away. In a cooling tube, the vapor is condensed with the essential oil and collected in a vessel called a Florentine vessel. The essential oil, which is usually lighter and therefore floats to the top, can separate from the water.
GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrography) is a combination of processes that analyzes ingredients based on their molecular mass spectrum and allows for even more differentiated quality assessment.
The individual components of the essential oil are separated and degraded in the gas chromatograph. A carrier gas carries a small amount of vaporized essential oil through a column. The molecules of the various ingredients line up, with each ingredient creating a so-called "peak", a jagged graph on the recorder (comparable to an EEG or EKG recording). With this method it is possible to quantify and characterize the constituents of the oil. By comparing with a database and relevant reference samples, the authenticity, quality and purity of the oil can be assessed.
Some essential oils increase the skin's sensitivity to light. After using these oils (natural perfume, body oil, massage oil), please do not go to the solarium or expose yourself to direct sunlight:
– Angelica root
– Bergamot
– bitter orange
– Clementine
– Grapefruit
– Lyme
- Lemon
The natural oil originates 100% from the respective mother plant, whose botanical name must be clearly identified. It is natural (genuine) and not modified. This means that PRIMAVERA oils do not contain any additives and are therefore one of a kind. They are not diluted with fractions of other, cheaper natural oils, nor are they adulterated or standardized with synthetic or nature-identical substances. Fluctuations in ingredients that depend on soil conditions, climate, atmospheric conditions during growth and harvest, as well as plant species, are not "corrected", but only the highest quality oils are selected. Of course, essential oils must meet aromatherapy standards and stay within strict composition guidelines. Natural essential oil is a multi-component mixture consisting of up to 500 different ingredients. This is one of the reasons why it is not yet possible to recreate a synthetic essential oil in its entirety.
These are essential oils that must meet the pharmacopoeia standard of the respective country in terms of ingredients, quantities and density of ingredients. This ensures an essential oil with consistent ingredients and physical properties. If a natural essential oil does not meet the standard of the pharmacopoeia, it is "enhanced" with naturally identical or isolated ingredients such as geraniol, menthol, etc. The standards that the legislator has set for essential oils in the pharmacopoeias do not meet our quality standards at Primavera. This is why they do not sell standardized essential oils.
Essential oils have different volatilities due to their composition. These instabilities affect the fragrance's longevity. There are three categories.
A lot of effort goes into the production of the precious frankincense essential oil. First, the frankincense resin is harvested by hand. The collection method is a centuries-old tradition. Official collection and control licenses now exist to ensure a sustainable and safe supply. For this purpose, the bark of the wild Boswellia tree is scratched and the exuding resin is collected. However, it can only be collected when the leaves sprout and when the flowers bloom.
This must be done with great care and expertise so as not to damage the tree. In addition, the tree needs periods of rest. Dried frankincense resin is obtained by boiling water distillation in special frankincense stills. The technologist must know exactly how to distill frankincense to obtain the highest quality essential oil with the fullest aroma.
PRIMAVERA offers two types of frankincense essential oil, with different origins: Somali frankincense and Indian frankincense . The fresh essential oil with a balsamic aroma has a cleansing and balancing effect. It is often used for meditation, as it leads to inner peace. In skin care, frankincense is used for regeneration and is very useful for cracked, dry hands.

Essential oils work both mentally and physically. They support your well-being and quality of life, and can reduce stress and anxiety. Stimulating aromas activate and invigorate, while soothing aromas relax and harmonize. Mixed in base body oils, they have a warming or cooling, invigorating, refreshing, nourishing and regenerating effect on our skin. Aromatic mixtures and organic sprays for aromatizing rooms are divided into active groups. They are compositions of several coordinated essential oils that can accompany you in any situation.
The oil content of aromatic plants varies between 0,001% and up to about 20% in cloves.
For example, from 100 kg of plant material, the following amounts of essential oil are obtained: 2,1 kg of lavender oil, 0,4 kg of rosemary oil, 0,1 kg of hyssop oil, 0,3 kg of sage oil and 0,012 kg of lemon balm.
Citrus oils are a general term for members of the citrus fruit family: bergamot , grapefruit , mandarin , lemon , orange , etc.
The name "Absolue" comes from the method of extraction (lat. solvere - I solve). The aromas of some precious types of flowers such as jasmine, tuberose or mimosa cannot be obtained by steam distillation. Even extraction with alcohol does not produce the desired result. Today, chemical solvents such as hexane are mostly used to extract the fragrances from flowers. The first thing that comes out is an ointment-like concrete that contains wax. In the next step, the solvent is distilled with alcohol under low pressure. The absolute is obtained as a liquid or viscous final product. It is very aromatic, 1-2 drops are enough to aromatize 50 ml of base oil.
In some plants (e.g. rosemary, thyme) oils of the same species have different chemical compositions of constituents depending on where the plant is grown. These oils are also called by their chemotype, as they have different areas of application. Examples: rosemary verbenone / rosemary cineole , thyme thymol / thyme linalool.
While many essential oils eventually lose their unique aroma or beneficial properties over time, due to certain ingredients (e.g. monoterpenes), there are others that, on the contrary, develop their aroma over time and mature like a fine wine. These essential oils are particularly popular for the production of natural perfumes, as their aroma becomes more special, complex and deep over time. Among these maturing aromas are sandalwood , vetiver , cedar and patchouli.
Almost all essential oils have antibacterial and air-purifying properties that can reduce the number of microbes. Oils high in monoterpenes and aldehydes are particularly powerful in this regard. Monoterpenes are found mainly in woody and citrus oils, while high amounts of aldehydes are found in fresh grass oils ( citronella , lemongrass , and eucalyptus ).
In combination with an aroma diffuser, we recommend aroma blends , which are specially developed for use in aroma lamps, diffusers and aroma fountains. If you want to use pure essential oils as a room freshener, make sure that no viscous or resinous oils (base notes) are used. In addition, diffusers should be cleaned regularly to ensure proper use.
Essential oils are concentrated plant power and have an impact on the body, mind and soul. They develop their effect even in the smallest dose and should not be applied undiluted to the skin. We recommend mixing essential oils with an organic carrier oil or as a bath additive. Each of our essential oils has a specific recommended cosmetic dosage. You can find many recipe suggestions on our website.
Let your own nose be your guide, it will help you decide which essential oil is right for you. You will intuitively feel the aroma of the right oil for you.
Essential oils are very reactive, i.e. they oxidize when combined with oxygen. Because of this, they can sometimes cause unwanted skin reactions. To avoid this, always use essential oils that are as fresh as possible and use them up quickly. When buying, make sure the closure is original and it is best to buy small quantities of 10ml maximum. Record the date the bottle was opened.
В MAKASA online store you will find only essential oils with a guarantee of freshness. For example, Primavera oils are protected from inert gas oxidation, amber glass bottles also offer 100% UV protection, originally sealed for product protection and customer safety. The cap clicks on the first opening, so you can be sure that the essential oil is opened for the first time and therefore completely fresh. The bottle is protected against opening by children.
The shelf life of essential oils is unlimited in the originally sealed bottle. Once opened, the oil will last depending on its composition and storage conditions. Citrus oils and conifer oils have a shelf life of approximately 6 months, and other essential oils - on average between 1 and 3 years. Some essential oils such as sandalwood, vetiver or patchouli acquire an increasingly distinct aroma with longer storage (at least 3 years).
For a better shelf life and to protect against oxidation, the essential oils in PRIMAVERA are covered with a layer of argon during bottling. It is a natural inert gas that prevents oils from reacting with oxygen. In general, optimal storage conditions in a well-closed bottle, protected from light and at room temperature (between 20°C and 22°C) help you use your essential oils for as long as possible with consistently high quality.
With essential oils you have the opportunity to promote your personal, individual well-being. You can find recipes for bath additives, aromatic blends, massage oils and their applications on our homepage in the MaKaSa blog "Essential Oil Recipes". You will also find many safe recipes in the books available in our online store.
Essential oils are also used in the food industry. For example, Earl Gray black tea is flavored with bergamot oil. The legal basis for this is the Ordinance on Flavors. PRIMAVERA oils are only available in accordance with the legal declaration as cosmetic products.
Intolerance is rare, but can occur with all products, regardless of dosage. In general, if you have known allergies, hypersensitivity or previous illnesses (eg asthma), it is important to "sniff" essential oils carefully.
Scenting rooms
With natural, sparingly dosed aromatization of rooms, the risk of allergy is almost unthinkable. The concentration of fragrances is too low. With different types of diffusers, the saturation of the room can be different, for this reason we follow the rule "less is more". As aromas fall downward, the strength of the aroma is most intense near the floor (approximately 50 cm).
Application to the skin
When using on the skin, we recommend a tolerance test in the crease of the arm if you are known to have sensitive skin. To do this, mix 1-2 drops of the relevant essential oil in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (e.g. almond oil) and apply to the skin in the crook of your hand. If there is no reaction after 10-20 minutes, the essential oil can be safely used for larger applications on the body.
Ingesting essential oils for medicinal purposes or using them in cooking is potentially very dangerous and not something we would recommend. The human digestive system is used to processing trace amounts of essential oils in herbs and spices, and this is a safe practice; however, each essential oil is at least 100 times more concentrated than that found in an herb or spice, which can cause irritation and internal damage to the digestive tract.
This is why we never recommend using essential oils in this way. Our range contains quality essential oils, but the practice of oral use is not recommended.
We only recommend application to the skin, mucous membranes and inhalation. Oral administration in the oral cavity (mucosa), e.g. as a mouth spray, gargle, oil gargle, is still considered a cosmetic application and is (at a low dose) problem-free. This form of administration can help prevent the spread of unwanted germs in the mouth.
Sometimes essential oils are also used internally. However, you should have good specialist knowledge and pay attention to reliable sources when getting information about it. Internal use, for example swallowing capsules, should only be done under (aroma)therapeutic supervision and for a short, spa-periodic period of time.
Manufacturers or distributors of essential oils must declare their products and decide which legal basis they use to market their oils. There are different approval options and therefore different legal specifications for declaration:
– as a requirement for use in room aromatization
– as a cosmetic for use in skin care products, in oil rubs, as a bath additive, etc.
– as a food product for flavoring food and thus also for ingestion
We at MaKaSa choose the approach of proven specialists in the field such as PRIMAVERA - namely the use of essential oils for cosmetic products, as this is how we cover the most important application area for us, aromatherapy. Therefore, according to the legal basis, our essential oils are not suitable for ingestion.
100% pure natural essential oils do not leave a greasy residue, but they can stain fabrics and clothing. It is best to test in an inconspicuous area or drop the essential oil on a separate piece of cloth/paper tissue and then place it next to your pillow, for example.
Essential oils are made up of different biochemical substances. This can be a dozen or more components. For example, rose oil consists of more than 400 ingredients. The characteristic aroma of an oil is often characterized by a particular component. For example, geraniol causes the rose scent in rose oil, citral the citrus note in lemongrass oil.
In Greek, "ethereal" means "heavenly space". The poetic name refers to the characteristics of essential oils: they are volatile, evaporate quickly and, figuratively speaking, rise to the sky.
